Plot Applications

How can I apply for a plot at Bonfire Hill Allotments?

Below you will find information about becoming a tenant or plot-holder on our site.

How large is a plot?

Allotments have been around a long time and they were traditionally measured in rods. You will still hear this measurement being used. Ten rods is the normal size of a full plot.  This is roughly equivalent to 250 square metres.  Ten rods is quite a large area – especially for newcomers.  For this reason, we generally offer new tenants a half plot or quarter plot.

This gives new people a chance to enjoy the benefits of gardening on an allotment without feeling overwhelmed.  There may be opportunities at a later date for keen gardeners to increase the size of their plot.  We give priority to plot holders who are residents living in the parish of Salcombe.  We do not admit people living in second homes as it’s impractical for them to give the commitment needed to maintain an allotment.   Members have to sign an agreement with the Town Council which sets out their rules for the tenancy.

How much do I pay each year for my plot?

Plots are charged by size.  The current charge (2024/25) for each full plot of 10 rods is £25 pa, for each half plot of 5 rods is £12.50 and for a quarter plot £6.25.

There is currently a subscription fee of £18 per member levied on an annual basis.

Bonfire Hill Allotments is a self-managed site so the committee decides on the allotment subscription fees each year.  The plot rental charges are decided by the Town Council.
